Kandahar’s Turn

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

The hits just keep on rolling…

KABUL, Afghanistan – Insurgents firing rockets, mortars and automatic weapons launched a ground assault Saturday against NATO’s biggest base in southern Afghanistan, wounding several coalition troops and civilian employees in the second such attack on a major military installation this week, officials said.

A Canadian Press news agency report from the Kandahar Air Field said artillery and machine gun fire reverberated through the base, about 300 miles (500 kilometers) southwest of Kabul, several hours after the attack began. Militants unleashed rockets and mortars about 8 p.m. (15:30 GMT) and then tried unsuccessfully to storm the northern perimeter, officials said.

Um, sure is a good thing we didn’t send as many troops as General Petraeus requested otherwise the Taliban might not feel so emboldened as to directly attack the two largest US Military bases in Afghanistan. I think it’s about time to a) give the man the troops he needs to attain stability in the country, b) give the force protection folks on the bases (including the average Joes on the ground) the freedom to defend their bases without fear of repercussions, and c) start taking base security seriously like they did in the earlier years of the war. US military bases in combat zones aren’t just make-work program implementation stations for local nationals, they are the axles upon which the wheels of war roll.

Bagram Attack Update

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Okay, this is what I’ve gotten from my source on Bagram about the attack the other day and it was confirmed as good poop by another guy I know on Bagram. From the eyes on the ground…

I personally was woken up at around 0345 by the sound of close AK fire. There were around 15 AAF going for ECP 1 with a VBIED and suicide vests… which turned out to be the successful diversion.  Apaches were in the air within minutes of all hell breaking loose at ECP 1 but in the interim somewhere between 7-10 AAF with grenades and RPGs made it through the first perimeter fence by Coyote Creek on the North side close to the SF compound.  Air cover was already in the air and they were stuck in no man’s land so they went for the final perimeter fence and started tossing grenades over the Hescos trying to hit the living areas (which in my opinion are obviously too close to the fence line).  Guys from 173rd and a couple Sr NCOs coming through BAF on R&R put together a team and shot 1 AAF with a stack of RPGs and 3 others with suicide vest that were in the process of breaching the perimeter…At least one had made it through and was killed within moments and the other died stuck in the wire.  One of the towers was also breached (although [unconfirmed] rumor has it the AF tower guard, who man the tower with a ANA partner, fled his post…not sure if that is true or just standard AF bashing) All the big stuff was over with by 0630, SAF continued throughout the day. The scary part was how close these guys came to really doing some damage…They were literally within 25 yards of housing areas.  Force Protection on BAF is a joke…Simple things like not allowing the vegetation to grow 3 ft high up to the perimeter fence, not having living areas within grenade throwing distance of the weak perimeter and other common sense stuff.

If not for the quick thinking of a few take charge NCOs and a few guys they were able to scoop up, we would have been screwed. Some of those guys wound up badly injured, but they held the (thin) line.

Oh and there were obvious signs that there was a large force forming up for something and probes for the last 6 wks. And they were spot on regarding where the weak points were. Not a warm fuzzy feeling.  And it is very curious why this has not gotten more media attention…VERY strange indeed.

Then I asked if the breach and attack were near Camp Cherry-Beasley where I thought it was and this is the response I got…

Yep, the 5 guys the make shift QRF shot were along the stretch behind Cherry Beasley and the North DFAC ending at the UAE compound. Oh and all the dead guys were wearing full ACUs complete with brown t shirt. This was not just some half assed attempt, this was well planned,
coordinated and executed. Each of the dead guys were rigged to blow with HME and grenades.

[There are guys here who] were here back in 2004-2005 and they have mentioned how different the FP is. All the concrete is gone, those of us lucky enough to be in a B-Hut are exposed;  we had a contractor killed in my area (Infantry Village) in FEB by a 107 rocket that had his B-hut had something as simple as sand bags, he probably would have made it through…but they have gotten rid of those too… Billeting moves Soldiers into stacked CHUs on the perimeter with NO type of barriers in place… [removed to protect anonymity].

We have kids who like to spend their days throwing rocks across the fence into our work area trying to hit us or our VSAT.  The other day one of them had a slingshot and was shooting out the big perimeter lights.  BASE OP and FP were called but [the unit] was told they are not responsible for replacing the lights. NO SHIT, think you can maybe send over someone to chase them off? [If any of the soldiers in this unit do anything other verbally reprimand the kids they get UCMJ action no matter how many times they get hit with a rock]  There probably was a reason these kids were going after the lights (duh), just like they were likely the ones who supplied the weapons caches they found on the perimeter the last couple days. Oh and we have had Haji come through the fence and right up to the towers at night and walk off with the solar panels…But the guards are at least in full rattle now.

We have tried to go through the right channels, we have jumped up and down and screamed about this stuff,  we have gotten IG involved and we get the same BS answers and nothing changes (although IG did get their attention for about a week). Just like this incident will get people spun up for a couple weeks, then it will be back to business as usual. There was no plan for something like this, unless you call random people coming around on a gator telling you to lock and load and sit in the bunker a plan. Makes me long for the days of “stand to”.  I guess that we should count ourselves lucky there was no fratricide.

Things don’t look so good out in Bagram. The BDOC at BAF never really did have it all together but now it seems like it’s all falling apart. WTF? Removing the concrete bunkers? Housing within grenade range of the hescoes? That’s JV bullshit. You don’t do that and expect to NOT have all hell break loose.

And for all those that want to throw out the “were you there?” and “did you witness this?” questions, no I wasn’t… but I have two people that way that this is about how it went down so take it for what its worth. I personally tend to believe it.

Um, Why Isn’t This All Over The News Like It Should Be?

Friday, May 21st, 2010

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Taliban insurgents armed with rockets, grenades and suicide vests stormed the giant U.S.-run Bagram Air Field before dawn Wednesday, triggering an eight-hour firefight that killed an American contractor and at least 10 attackers and wounded nine U.S. service members.

As troops and contractors huddled in secure bunkers, the militants fired their weapons over American defenses into the base, according to Maj. Virginia McCabe, a spokeswoman for U.S. forces at Bagram. White smoke could be seen rising from the garrison as U.S. attack helicopters whirred overhead.

It was the second major Taliban assault in the Kabul area in as many days, breaking a nearly three-month lull in insurgent attacks around the Afghan capital. Eighteen people, including five U.S. soldiers and a Canadian colonel, were killed Tuesday in a suicide car bombing in Kabul.

Seriously. Why isn’t this plastered all over the news like it should be? Every time an insurgent farted near the Green Zone in Iraq the press was all over it and touting the failings of the Bush administration and how it was indicative of the futility of fighting that part of the War on Terror. Of course once the Obama administration took over it was more than happy to claim victory in Iraq and take credit for all of the work done there by the previous administration. Don’t get me wrong… I know that this kind of thing is standard practice for all administrations.

My issue is this: we have just seen a full frontal assault on the biggest US Military base in Afghanistan and there is pretty much NOTHING in the main stream media about it. It’s almost like it never happened yet this is HUGE. Attacking Bagram just north of ECP 3 within a few hundred yards of (what used to be when I was there) the Ranger and SF compounds is just brazen. The fear isn’t there anymore. The Taliban wants to lure the US into using methods that will cause civilian casualties and they want to terrorize the FOBBITs so they go home and bitch about how “bad” it is over there. They know what they’re doing and they’re working… and most America is either ignorant that the attack even occurred, don’t understand the significance, or just don’t care. Pathetic.

Success has a thousand fathers, failure is an orphan… but embarrassing strategic shortsightedness is an abortion.

If you want to educate yourself, the story about this is here and the photo is from here.

And That Was Supposed To Prove Him Wrong Somehow?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Flood said officers later learned that the injured man and two others had been arguing with other people at the birthday party. Flood says the man told 21-year-old Anna Godfrey that she was fat.

Officers said Godfrey then tackled the man and took a bite.

Flood said the ear chunk was not found.

My guess is that she ate it. I’m thinking that the best counter to “you’re fat” isn’t trying to eat the person that insulted you. Maybe go on a strict exercise and diet regimen until you look like a lingerie model and then return to flaunt your new-found hotness in front of him, but for God’s sake don’t try to eat the guy. You just proved his point, lady.

Taliban Rockets Kandahar Air Base… Still Can’t Hit Crap

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Once again proving that the Taliban are bunch of retarded, cowardly amateurs much more interested in buggering little boys than actually executing an effective attack on a sizable coalition base in Afghanistan, the Taliban managed to once again launched poorly aimed rockets at a coalition base in Afghanistan…

KABUL —  A rocket strike at the major international military base in southern Afghanistan wounded eight foreign service members — four Bulgarians and four Romanians — NATO said Monday.

The rocket hit inside Kandahar Air Field on Sunday evening, said Flight Lt. Wendy Wheadon, a spokeswoman for the international force.

The attack occurred as Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolai Mladenov visited 270 Bulgarian troops who guard the inner zone of the Kandahar airport, the ministry said. Mladenov was about 400 yards from where the rocket hit and was not hurt.

Yup, that’s right… they still couldn’t manage to kill anybody. These guys are such toolbags that they can’t seem to completely take out soldiers from Eastern European armies on static targets such as gigantic air fields that serve as major logistics hubs with massive concentrations of people. Yeah, yeah, I know that eight people got hurt… but they only got hurt.

See, this is the major difference between the Taliban and US Forces. The Taliban balances old Soviet made rockets on rocks and gives them a rough angle and deflection and then they set timers and walk away. Several hours later the timers launch the rockets (which could have fallen off the rocks by that time) and they generally miss. Why? Because they’re too big a bunch of pussies to man up and keep the rockets on target because that would expose them to counter fire. What do US Forces do? Well, in the case of our buddy VT Woody, they walk out in the middle of a fire fight among a hail of 7.62 rounds, calmly prepare and deploy an AT-4, aim it at the Taliban that are preoccupied with their 7.62 round dispersal, and he lets it rip at them… which, by the way, tends to end the fire fight pretty friggin’ quick. So that’s the difference: the Taliban run away before the fight even starts, the US Army walks into the middle of it.

The Taliban: cowardly, retarded vaginae in turbans who couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn from the inside. (My apologies to any actual female sex organs or female sex organ owners that may have been offended by the comparison.)

Good Job Abdul… Next Time Let’s Kill More Of Them Than Us…

As impressive as an impotent octegenarian who’s hung like a mouse running around naked at the Playboy Mansion (sorry Hugh)…

Taliban gunmen and suicide bombers have attacked buildings in the heart of the Afghan capital, Kabul, setting off explosions and sparking gun battles.

Fighting erupted near the Serena Hotel and the presidential palace, although Afghan President Hamid Karzai says security has now been restored.

Officials say that two civilians and three security personnel have been killed and 71 others wounded.

Dude, you couldn’t even manage a 1:1 ratio of your dead to your victims? The kid that stood in front of the tank at Tienanmin Square did better than you losers. I mean, seriously. As tightly packed and crowded as Kabul is you couldn’t kill more people than that? And this administration is actually willing to negotiate with amateurs like you? That’s like the head coach of the Steelers watching a middle school team get their asses handed to them in a regular season game and then having the coach of that team demand that the Steelers turn over one of their 473 Super Bowl rings. Nice try, but I think it’s time you went back to quietly molesting little boys on Thursdays you amateur backwater zealots.

P.S. I’ve seen condoms made of Swiss Cheese that were more effective than you.

Suck It North Korea

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

nknavySEOUL, South Korea – A badly damaged North Korean patrol ship retreated in flames Tuesday after a skirmish with a South Korean naval vessel along their disputed western coast, South Korean officials said.

The first naval clash between the two sides in seven years broke out just a week before President Barack Obama is due to visit Seoul, raising suspicions the North’s communist regime is trying to rachet up tensions to gain a negotiating advantage.

Okay, so here’s how I say it went down: North Korean ship comes snooping around South Korean waters. North Korean ship violates South Korean waters. South Korean ship comes in to confront North Korean ship. North Korean ship tells South Korean ship that it’s in North Korean waters. South Korean Captain gets sick of this immediately and lights up the North Korean’s ass. North Korean ship goes limping back to Kim Jong-Il with his ass on fire and his tail tucked like the little bitch he is.

Is That A Ferret In Your Pants?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

ferret1Oh, it is. My mistake…

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – It’s one thing for shoplifters to hide plunder in their pants. But a live ferret? Police said a homeless man in north Florida did just that. And he made it out the door before being challenged. Rodney Bolton, 38, was charged with theft over the $129 animal that police say he took from a pet store in Jacksonville Beach.

A 17-year-old witness confronted Bolton in the parking lot and was bitten by the animal after the man allegedly shoved it in the teen’s face.

That confrontation makes the ferret a “special weapon” under Florida law. So Bolton also faces battery charges for dangerously wielding the animal.

Ohhhhh, so that ’s what the “Special Weapons” in SWAT means! SWAT Teams are actually police officers highly skilled in the use of special tactics and ferrets to fight crime! It all makes sense now!

Are We At Least Approaching Saturation Point?

KabuldeadJust how much higher does the body count have to climb before we do something?

KABUL – Taliban militants wearing suicide vests and police uniforms stormed a guest house used by U.N. staff in the heart of the Afghan capital early Wednesday, killing 12 people — including six U.N. staff. It was the biggest in a series of attacks intended to undermine next month’s presidential runoff election.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the early morning assaults, which also included rocket attacks at the presidential palace and the city’s main luxury hotel.

The chief of the United Nations mission in Afghanistan, Kai Eide, said the attack “will not deter the U.N. from continuing all its work” in the country. One of the six U.N. dead was an American, the U.S. Embassy said.

They’re trying to kill UN election workers. Read that again: election workers. The Taliban is trying to cause this government and the next to fail in one fell swoop before the people of Afghanistan have even had their say. We cannot, I say again CANNOT, wait for election results before we send in troops to get the situation stabilized. What the hell has to happen before we act?!? We’re quickly becoming a laughing stock in the region and the entire Islamic world. A loss of face in this situation isn’t just an embarassment, it’s a national security issue. If we’re perceived as weak by our Jihadi enemies, they will use that perception as an invitation… and as we’ve all seen before, that’s not good.

Even as our Secretary of State is in Pakistan assuring that country that they have our full support, the Taliban/al Qaeda/Death Inc is sending their own message in their own particualr idiom…

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – A car bomb tore through a busy market in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing 91 people as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton visited the country and pledged American support for its campaign against Islamist militants.

More than 200 people were wounded in the blast in the main northwestern city of Peshawar, the deadliest in a surge of attacks this month. The government blamed militants seeking to avenge an army offensive launched this month against al-Qaida and Taliban in their stronghold close to the Afghan border.

They did this when our own Secretary of State was visiting their country. They don’t fear us anymore. Hell, they don’t even respect our strength anymore. We need to correct that and we need to correct that fast. The John Kerry’s of the world be damned… we need real leaders with real experience and a real plan and we need them really fast.

The time for deliberations is over Mr. President: it’s time to sh*t or get off the pot… and getting off the pot isn’t an option.

Our Old Stomping Grounds Back In The News… Again

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

The sun setting on Wardak... perhaps figuratively as well as literally unless we get more troops in place.

The sun setting on Wardak... perhaps figuratively as well as literally unless we get more troops in place.

The U.S. military said two American troops were killed by “an individual wearing an ANP (Afghan National Police) uniform” in Wardak province on Friday. Shahidullah Shahid, a spokesman for the Wardak provincial governor, said the policeman fired on the Americans while they were patrolling together Friday night, killing two and injuring two.

Halim Fidai, governor of Wardak, said two people who recommended the alleged assailant for his job were in custody for questioning. Fidai also said a joint team of American and Afghan officials was investigating the attack, interviewing both the American soldiers and the Afghans who had been on the patrol to learn what happened and how the gunman escaped.

I never trusted those ANP guys in Wardak. It always seemed like we had problems mostly when those guys were around. I know of at least one instance when they said “if you stay in this village tonight, you will be attacked” and they weren’t wrong… but it almost seemed like it was a threat more than a warning. I guess my misgivings were well founded.

I hope Obama gets his act together and sends those 40,000 troops that General McChrystal requested. Hell, considering he’s not intimidating or persuasive enough to get the Olympics in Chicago it’s no wonder the Taliban are emboldened as of late.

Lethal Taliban Rocket Strike On Bagram

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

KABUL – A rare rocket attack on the main U.S. base in Afghanistan early Sunday killed two U.S. troops and wounded six other Americans, including two civilians, officials said.

Bagram Air Base, which lies 25 miles (40 kilometers) northeast of Kabul, is surrounded by high mountains and long stretches of desert from which militants could fire rockets. But such attacks, particularly lethal ones, are relatively rare.

Two U.S. troops died and six Americans were wounded, including four military personnel and two civilians, said Lt. Cmdr. Christine Sidenstricker, a U.S. military spokeswoman.

The top government official in Bagram, Kabir Ahmad, said several rockets were fired at the base early Sunday. A spokesman with NATO’s International Security Assistance Force said that three rounds landed inside Bagram and one landed outside. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t the office’s top spokesman.

Rocket attacks at Bagram were pretty regular when I was there. At one point, they were almost a weekly occurrence and happened with enough regularity and ineffectiveness that we would refuse to leave the chow hall when an attack started if there was something good being served (French toast once kept me there during an attack). The initial attacks were more annoying than dangerous. Toward the end of my tour, their aim started to improve and they started getting closer to actual targets on base like barracks and fuel dumps. The closest they ever got to a direct hit on me was 60 yards away… the closest they got to the rest of my squad (because of the way the huts were laid out) was much, much closer. They did manage to get a rocket or two within a hundred yards of the fuel dump and that could have turned out very badly, but it didn’t so nobody got hurt badly. It’s a whole new ball game now.

The following are not pictures from the most recent attack, but a few examples of the aftermath of such attacks taken while I was at Bagram. I just wanted everyone to get an idea of what it was like.
This is damage sustained to one of the B-huts we (that is, troops on the base) stayed in when a rocket went through it, but didn’t detonate. This was less than 100 yards from our huts. This is more of the same B-Hut. Amazingly, the injuries were limited to minor scrapes and soiled underwear because the rocket failed to explode. If it had, it would have been much worse. And this is what happens to a connex when the rocket hits near it and does detonate. Here’s another of the same strike. Note the shrapnel holes in the steel.

Not A Huge Surprise

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

I was going to post something about this last night and lay out my suspicions for all to see, but I didn’t have time last night as I had a meeting to go to and it ran long. However, had I posted what I thought were going to be the inevitable results pertaining to the profile of the guy that shot up the recruiting offce down in Arkansas, I probably would have been labeled an alarmist at best and probably a racist/bigot/Islamophobe. Well, I did think it was a Muslim that fired up the place and it turns out that I was right.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A Muslim convert accused of killing a soldier in a “political and religious” attack on a military recruiting center pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a capital murder charge and was ordered held without bail.

Abdulhakim Muhammad, 23, of Little Rock, was charged in Monday’s death of Pvt. William Long, 23, of Conway outside an Army-Navy Career Center in a west Little Rock shopping center.

A prosecutor said Muhammad admitted shooting Long and another soldier “because of what they had done to Muslims in the past.”

“For what they had done in the past”? Two of the guys just finished basic training so I suppose he must have been angry at them getting yelled at and deprived of sleep at Muslims in the past. “For what they had done in the past.” This is typical, ignorant, radical Islamist brainwashing. This is typical fundamentalist crap. But for some reason, it’s not really big national news. Abortion doctor gets killed and it’s national news… huge news. Soldiers get killed by violent, radical, Muslim Jihadist waging war in the streets of our own country? Not newsworthy, apparently. Also not newsworthy was the fact that he was trained by foreign Jihadis and that he converted here. Another thing that isn’t very newsworthy? The fact that a lot of criminals are going into jail as freshmen thugs and coming out as varsity radical Muslim converts. Now, as for shutting down Gitmo and putting the REALLY bad eggs in with the rest of the societal dregs we have in our prisons already… ?

Thanks for keeping us so safe, O.

H/T to TAH for the pic.

The Apocalypse That Nixon And I Didn’t Foresee Starts

A Swedish robot nearly killed a man — but won’t be prosecuted.

English-language Swedish news Web site The Local reports that the near-fatal incident took place at a factory north of Stockholm in June 2007.

A worker was about to fix a broken rock-lifting robot. He’d shut the power off, but the machine suddenly woke up and grabbed the man by the head.

“The man was very lucky. He broke four ribs and came close to losing his life,” prosecutor Leif Johansson told the TT news agency.

Uh-huh. Sooooo, a machine that was powered-off just accidentally suddenly awakens and attacks it’s human master? Am I the only one here that sees that this is the beginning of the rise of the machines?!?! UAV’s are already replacing pilots! Predator drones are already replacing attack helicopters! EOD robots are already replacing sappers! Mrs. Sniper has already replaced me with a more efficient, less disappointing pseudo-robotic (and much more portable) version! They’re taking over and we’re letting them!

Run! Hide! Stock up on phased plasma rifles with a thirty watt range! Oh, and get a dog… they can smell Terminators.

Islamists Firing On A US Citizen? I’m Shocked. Shocked I Tell You.

Mortars at an airplane? Really?

MOGADISHU (Reuters) – Somalia’s militant Islamist rebel group al Shabaab said Monday it fired mortars at a plane carrying a U.S. lawmaker, a day after U.S. snipers killed three Somali pirates and freed the American ship captain they had been holding hostage.

An al Shabaab spokesman said his group fired at the plane carrying Representative Donald Payne as he left the anarchic Horn of Africa country following a rare one-day visit by a U.S. official. Payne’s plane took off safely and no-one was hurt.

Al Shabaab, which condemns both piracy and anti-piracy patrols by international navies off Somalia, said the attack on Payne’s plane was a message to the United States but did not directly link it to the hostage issue.

Of course these pirates and the Islamic extremists on terra firma in Somalia are completely unrelated. Other things that are completely unrelated are as follows:
-Drinking and hangovers
-Overeating and getting obese
-Mental illness and Rosie O’Donnell
-That burning sensation when you pee and your “vacation” to Thailand last week

So, now that he’s “passed his first test” on National Security, how is Obama going to respond to Islamist militants in Somalia trying to assasinate a member of Congress? Just curious.

Bad Monkey, No Banana

HARTFORD, Conn. – A 200-pound domesticated chimpanzee who once starred in TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola was shot dead by police after a violent rampage that left a friend of its owner badly mauled.

Sandra Herold, who owned the 15-year-old chimp named Travis, wrestled with the animal, stabbed it and hit it with a shovel after it inexplicably attacked her friend Charla Nash, 55.
What the story doesn’t mention is that because Travis was heavily medicated due to a bout of Lyme Disease Charla (to Travis) bore a striking resemblance to Zira from planet of the apes. Poor Travis was just trying to get his mack on and got taken down by the Five-Oh. Getting’ capped while you mack is just totally whack, yo.

Another entertainer who couldn’t handle his drugs.
